To get support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), your child aged over seven (7) years must have a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities.
You will need to contact a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to discuss your child and your family's needs. LACs assist people with disability to access the NDIS. Once you’re eligible for the NDIS, they will work with you to identify your goals for your first NDIS plan. They will also support you in exploring ways to achieve these goals and help you understand how the funding in your plan works. You choose who will provide your NDIS supports.
What does a LAC do?
Local area coordinators have four key roles:
- They link you to the NDIS, to information and support in the community
- They gather information with you for the development of your First Plan
- Where identified, they assist you to start your NDIS journey by supporting you to implement your plan and connect you to community
- They work with the local community to promote a more welcoming and inclusive environment for people with disability
What they don’t do:
- They are not support coordinators
- They don’t approve the funding amount for NDIS plans
Local Area Coordinators in each State/Territory
Throughout Australia, the NDIS have partnered with well known community-based organisations to deliver LAC services. Where multiple organisations have been partnered, you may note that the locations they service have been highlighted.
